We support medical and scientific research in Italy with our Italian based charity Algebris ETS. Algebris will match all donations and donate 1% of the firm’s profits to Algebris ETS

We are actively committed to carbon neutrality and have put into action our carbon off-setting project;

We strongly believe in valuing talent by working on educational training programmes for the future generation leaders.

Sustainability commitment

By recognising the extreme urgency of climate change and its challenges, Algebris aims to achieve carbon neutrality and has committed to offset all its emissions since inception through an operation of both reforestation and afforestation.

In 2020 the company launched the AlgeTrees project with a commitment to plant 1 million trees in the coming years. Between 2019 to 2022, 99,842 trees have been planted and in 2023, we aim to plant a further 85,000.

The AlgeTrees project is being carried out in cooperation with Hakuna Matata, the charity founded by Davide Serra, that has been operating in Tanzania since 2010, helping orphaned children through education and health programs.

The project is simple and easily scalable, entailing precise steps:

  • assessing the emission Algebris is directly responsible for (offices, flights, garbage, recycled paper);
  • translating CO2 into an equivalent number of trees by making assumptions on the trees’ absorption capacity over their life-cycle;
  • planting trees that can contribute to the economic welfare of the local community, in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs);
  • monitoring their growth on an ongoing basis and replenishing the stock in the event some perish.

Looking at future developments, Algebris and Hakuna Matata will endeavour to make the knowledge we have collectively accumulated in developing the AlgeTrees project available to anyone (firm or individual) who intends to take action against climate change.

Education

Scholarship Programmes with Bocconi University

Merit is key to Algebris which has committed to Scholarship Programmes with Bocconi University in Milan starting in 2017.

To strengthen this commitment to promote merit and support new generations, in 2019 Bocconi University with the contribution of Algebris, has established the Algebris Chair in Long-term Investment and Absolute Return: a five-year chair aiming to facilitate access to the new frontiers of asset management for the most talented students, including through a direct experience with an innovative Training Camp (that took place in January 2020, attended by 30 selected students of the Bocconi University Masters’) involving top fund managers worldwide.

Create a future generation of fund managers

All these programmes share a unique purpose: to unlock the potential of young talent and create a future generation of fund managers able to master long-term investment and absolute return, ensuring sustainable growth.

Charity foundation

Hakuna Matata

In April 2010, Davide Serra and his wife, Anna Barassi, founded Hakuna Matata, a registered UK charity for which Davide acts as Chairman and Trustee.Hakuna Matata is primarily focused on helping orphaned children in Central Tanzania, through education and healthcare programmes.

Childcare

Hakuna Matata’s unique ‘Family House’ orphanages currently house 150 children and employ 45 members of staff. Hakuna Matata’s funds have supported the building and running of 73 nursery schools across the region, allowing many children access to primary education and providing jobs to 135 local teachers.

Sustainability

The Pamoja Project is community initiative involving local people in sustainable farming and aiming at increasing revenues of their families. Hakuna Matata passionately believes that through initiatives such these, rural communities truly learn to live sustainably. Since 2019, our tree planting programmes have involved 450 farmers, 14 schools and over 20 other institutions such as the Njombe Prison.

Rehabilitation & Healthcare

Hakuna Matata supports Inuka Rehabilitation Hospital, the region’s only disability recovery centre in the village of Wanging’ombe. In 2022, the hospital treated over 3,500 patients with rehabilitation needs and provided 300 supportive devices, whilst engaging with local communities to improve people’s understanding and acceptance of disabilities. In addition, Hakuna Matata provides subsistence packs and further assistance to those suffering from HIV/AIDS, especially women and children.
