Algebris Policy & Research Forum, the not-for-profit advisory forum launched in September last year, welcomes three new prominent members: Sigmar Gabriel, Helle Thorning-Schmidt and Silvia Merler.
German politician, Sigmar Gabriel and Save the Children International CEO, Helle Thorning-Schmidt, join the Forum as advisers, alongside Davide Serra, Sir Nicholas Clegg and Matteo Renzi.
Sigmar Gabriel, politically active since 1976, is one of the most committed European politicians of his generation. In his many roles, from Prime Minister of Lower Saxony from 1999 to 2003, to his most recent as Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs in Germany from 2017-2018, he has always fought to strengthen the European Union. From 2013 to 2018, Mr. Gabriel served as Vice-Chancellor of Germany, after being elected directly as a member of the German Federal Parliament for four consecutive mandates.
Helle Thorning-Schmidt, Prime Minister of the Danish Government from 2011 to 2015, former leader of the Social Democratic Party in Denmark and member of the European Parliament, brings an in-depth knowledge of both European and international regulatory and policy issues, together with her well-proven strategic expertise.
Silvia Merler will lead Algebris Policy & Research Forum as Head of Research, returning to Italy after various international roles. She served as economic analyst at the European Commission’s Directorate General for Economic and Financial Affairs (ECFIN), then as Affiliate Fellow at Bruegel, the Brussels-based economic policy think tank. Silvia is a PhD candidate in European and Eurasian Studies at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). Her research focuses on European political economy, with attention to European macro and financial economics issues, as well as EU institutions and governance.
Silvia Merler will coordinate the advisers together with Davide Serra, helping to present balanced research which encompasses each individual’s expertise.
